99 Juta Street will comprise a restaurant, a bar, four showrooms and four residential units. It was spearheaded by Dokter and Misses, a prominent Johannesburg industrial design firm, who were looking to create a development that would house a new showroom, as well as the work of other Johannesburg designers. When partnering with two prominent Johannesburg developers, the program of the building was increased to include residential units. The project involves the renovation of a four storey 1930s office building. The most prominent new feature being added is a goods hoist on the street-facing facade.

Local Studio has a number of commissions in Braamfontein and has become known for its ethos in urban renewal. The building was designed in close collaboration with Dokter and Misses, who have been responsible for many of the unusual finishes and fittings in the building. The building really only has one public face, which houses a goods hoist and is clad in pink mosaic. In the design, Local Studio really tried to bring across a notion of transparency – a connection between the inside and the outside – both as a passive surveillance measure, in what is quite an underdeveloped part of Juta street, and to make the design pieces clearly visible from the street.

Construction began in the begining of 2016. The biggest challenges have been budget related, but have also involved the resolution of the goods hoist to conform to health and safety requirements.
